Two days for Santa Count

 I  have gotten a few emails from students who will be out of town Sat. for the Santa Count. Since I want everyone to be able to come who wants to, I have added a second Santa Count.  Sun. Jan 2 will be for those who are out of town tomorrow.  Drop by from 2-3 that day for hot chocolate and cookies and count the Santa's.  The winner will be announced at the party on Jan. 7th:)  Enjoy your vacation.  Merry Christmas to each and everyone of my wonderful Battlefield family!

I want to tank everyone for all the kind words and prayers during my dad's illness. He is still very sick in Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in NC. I hope to be here all week and leave at lunch time Fri so that I can go back to be with him. Mrs. Poole will be my sub. With that said, sadly I will have to cancel the Trick or Treating at my house on Friday night. I so hate to disappoint my students, but I feel my mom and Dad need me. I have something really special planned for the class at my house during the winter holidays so I hope that makes up for not being able to come Friday night. When things calm down a little, I will waer my costume for them to see what I was planning to be.


Do not forget the art packet is due Nov. 4th. You must but the magnet, it is not free. Early release and the end of the 1st nine weeks Friday. I am still planning on having the parent planning meeting at my house Nov. 4th at 7:00. We had a great first practice on stage today, so I feel this will be the best VA program ever. Parent conference times came home in today's Tue. envelope. I am completely full, so I hope the times will work. I gave everyone the closest time to the time that was asked for. Paper packets did not get stapled together today because we had an end of the 9 weeks movie that started right after lunch. There was only 1 or 2 papers so just sign them and return them by Fri. important update

Hi everyone, Thank you much for all the well wishes and prayers.  Sat. was a very rough day so I am hoping today will be better.  Just wanted to remind everyone that Trick or Treating at my house on Halloween has been postponed to Friday night.  Students are invited to come by and get candy and see my costume from 6-8.  They can dress up if they want and I will be taking pictures.  The Virginia planning commettee will be Thur. night at my house at 7.  Again, thank you for your support during this tough time.  Mrs. J

I have just received word that my dad is very sick.  I need to go to be with him.  I  need to cancel the Virginia program planning meeting that was set for Thur. night at my house. I will reschedule it for one night next week and will email the day and time through Teacher Ease and the class blog.  I am not sure it I will be back by Sunday night for Trick or Treating.  Again,I will let you know through Teacher Ease and the blog if that has to be canceled.  I am so sorry that I have to be away at the time.  Thank you for your every present support, Mrs. Jones

A huge thank you to the  class and Mrs. Parent for my wonderful Birthday lunch.  It was my favorite from my favorite resturant!  We enjoyed lunch together in the classroom and watched a Magic School Bus movie!

I’m very excited to tell you about another trash opportunity to help out in the classrooms. Sunny Delight (a.k.a. Sunny D) drinks are giving away free books. It’s called the SunnyD Book Spree, and the program will donate 20 books to every classroom that sends in 20 SunnyD UPC labels. The program will also award hundreds of books to the ten schools that collect the most labels.

One week down!

Teacher Ease letters will be in Tues. packets. These letters will explain how to sign up. If you have problems, let me know. As soon as that happens I will be sending out weekly emails along with posting on the class blog. Grades will be onTeacher Ease starting the 2nd nineweeks.
When you get the stapled paperpacket on Tues. sign the top sheet and return the entire packet back to me by Friday.  (Do not tear anything off or a part)  I will keep eveything on file for future parent/teacher conferences.  Have a great weekend:)

First Day

Our first day was great!  I believe it was one of the best in my 32 year career!    I had hoped to have a surprise for parents tonight, but it will have to wait until tomorrow. (I was so impressed by my students, that I forgot to do something I needed to do)  Check your emails tomorrow and if you want me to add your email to my list, let me know.

Reminders for the first day:)

1. Do not forget your healthy snack and a spoon or fork if you need it.
2. Remember your water bottle.  Make sure it is  leak proof.
3. You will need running shoes everyday.
4. Remember to bring back the papers your parents filled out.
5. Bring all your school materials.  We wil organize everything on Tue.
6. Make sure that your art shirt and gym suit are in zip lock baggies with your name on them.

Open House Was Amazing!

Unpack the classroom day is coming!!!

Yeap...the big day is almost here!  Mark your calendars for Aug. 16!  Any previous student who would like to help me unpack my classroom and set it up is welcome to come.  We will start about 9am and finish up at noon.  Have your parents pick you up then under the big tree at the picnic tables.  I will provide pizz at at 11:30.  Bring your own drink and a mid morning snack. A huge thank you to everyone that helped to make our Yehakin such a hugh success!  It fantastic.  We can not wait for all our families to see it at the class picnic.

It’s a go for building the Yehakin today. Parents sign in at the office and be in the classroom by 8:30. There will be a short “how to build” PowerPoint and then we will head out to the build site. If you have materials, drop them off behind the school at the walk and talk cafeteria door. So excited!!!!!!!! See ya there!

Summer reading materials

Today each student will be bringing home a folder of summer reading material and math review. I encourage each child to read and practice some math throughout the summer months. It is so easy to lose what is learned during the school year over the summer

 Friday June 4th-Ice cream Party and lunch in the room. Remember to bring in the toppings you volunteered for.

 June 5th – Candle light tour of the Cold Harbor Battlefield. Tours start at 8 pm. I would be there by 7:30. Remember to bring bug spray and flashlight.

 June 7th- SODA Grand Finale. Remember to wear a shirt that can be signed by your classmates and your SODA bracelet if you still have it.

 June 9th-YEHAKIN build. Hope everyone was aware of the change in date from the 8th. Parents who are helping to build should sign in and come to my room by 8:30. Materials can be dropped of at the site the night before or the morning of. We will be building it outside the cafeteria door under my classroom window. If possible, the saplings should be green and not dry.

Important update!


I hope everyone is enjoying a great Memorial Day Weekend. Have fun and be safe!

As the Yehakin forms come back in, there are a few items we still need. We have no 6-8- foot saplings or 4” branches. (If need be, we could substitute bamboo for the 4 foot branches.) We also could use more adult help. Please let me know if you could donate these items or help out that day. Next week I will post what we have and what we still need.

Our SODA’s are requesting that students wear a white t shirt or one that can be signed by everyone. The t-shirt signing is a tradition following the Grand Finale. (This would be a change from the permission slip that requested that the students wear their class t-shirt.)

I am so proud of how hard the class worked on the Reading and Math SOL test. I feel they are all working to do their best. We will finish up next Wed. with SS. I would love to give the class an ice cream Sunday to celebrate their hard work. Let me know it you would like to help me by providing some toppings.

Due to a special Ed meeting that I need to attend on the 8th, I am changeing the Yehakin build to June 9th starting at 8:15. Look for several important items in today's envelope. Just a few reminders:




For the fieldtrip tomorrow

 Parents riding the bus should be at school by 7:45, sign in at the office and then come on up to the room. If you have not filled out a vol. form you must do so before we leave.

 Remember NO IPODS or BACKPACKS

 Every one should bring a bag lunch, 2 drinks and something to sit on for the picnic lunch.

 Wear sunscreen, hats, caps, visors, and sun glasses
   Tennis shoes only

 Put your name on everything along with your phone numbers, especially on cameras.

 Parents not going on the trip need to be at the school at 4 to meet the bus.

 If your child is riding home with someone else, we need to have a note.

 When the buses arrive, you will sign you child out from the cafeteria.

Happy Spring everybody. Hope all is enjoying the warm weather! I have a few reminders for this week…

 Reading Olympic completion is Friday. Students not in Ro will be having a pizza party. They will need to bring in $2 to cover the cost. They may give this to me anytime.

 Students in RO got a schedule today. Parents will need to save this and bring it with them on Friday.

 Students received information on the spring party today. Each child will need to bring in a clean ½ gallon milk/juice cardboard carton with their name on the bottom. It will be used in a craft.

 Please call Mrs. Kemp 928-6500 if you could provide a snack or goodie for the goodie bag for the party

 Fieldtrip to the battlefields tomorrow! It looks like we will have great weather! Students need to bring a bag lunch, drink, beach towel and trash bag (the ground will be damp, so we will put the trash bag under the towel)

 End of 3rd nine weeks will be April 2. That is a whole day.

Ask your child about the special visitor that came to class today – Mr. Johnny Clem! Mr. Clem was a nine-year-old drummer boy for the Union during the Civil War. The students were able to ask him a series of questions about his life during the Civil War and he even brought two special treats to share with the class! The first “treat” he brought was hardtack, a hard, flat, cracker/biscuit that soldiers ate during the Civil War. The other treat was apple cake, a special treat that the young soldier’s mother would make for him. Here are the recipes for these two treats so you can try them at home!
Hardtack:
4 cups flour
4 teaspoons salt
2 cups water

Mix the flour and salt together. Add enough water to wet the mixture (may not need all 2 cups). Roll out the mixture on a pan and bake at 300 degrees until hardened.
Apple Cake:
1 cup brown sugar            1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup white sugar              1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs                               1 cup milk
2 ½ cups flour                   2 cups apples, chopped to small pieces
½ cup butter/margarine      1 teaspoon vanilla
Grease and flour a 13”x9” pan (or cupcake pans). Cream the sugars and butter. Add eggs. Mix dry ingredients and add with milk. Add apples and vanilla. Pour in pan and sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon (chopped walnuts are optional). Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Greetings All!
Since we are nearing the end of our literature circles I would like to take the opportunity to get everyone up to speed with where we are right now and where we are going in the near future.

Students are reading each assigned section of their chosen book and completing their assigned literature circle role for that section. They are then meeting for a book talk with their group where students share and respond to each other’s contributions. I am very proud of the effort students are putting into each of their roles so far and I am looking forward to exploring their Literature Circle Response Journals when they turn them in to be graded. It is always interesting to see what each student has gotten out of the different parts of the book they chose to read.

As we are finishing up our books, I do want to remind you all of our Book Celebration Day that is quickly approaching us on March 12, 2010. I will be bringing in a special treat that relates to each of the books and each student’s Book Response Project will be due on that day as well. Each student will share his or her book response at the celebration. I would also like to extend an invitation to any parents, grandparents, or other family that would like to join us to please feel free to do so. The Book Celebration Day promises to be a fun (and tasty) way to conclude our literature circles and we would love to have you there to share in the excitement! I will provide more details on the times and schedule of events later.

Classroom Update!

We have been very busy lately catching up from all of our snow days. The students have been working really hard and their effort certainly shows!

In reading we have formed “Literature Circles” based on the students’ first, second, and third choice book out of four options. All of the students were pleased to see that they were placed in a group of either their first or second choice. This week they have read the first assigned section of their book and completed their first literature circle role. I am very proud of their hard work so far and am excited to hear them share their jobs in our first book talk tomorrow (Friday)!

In math the students have mastered adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators and we are moving on into adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. This could prove to be a challenging task for students, but I know they can do it!

In social studies we have marched into studying the Civil War. We have watched a video and covered chapter 10, lesson 1 in our social studies textbook. There will be a quiz on this section on Tuesday, February 23, 2010.

In response to our studies of the Civil War, Mrs. Jones’ 4th graders have also been divided, much like the states of our early nation. Two-thirds of the class now represents the Union and one-third of the class represents those who have “seceded” to form the Confederate States of America. Students will gain points for their side through academic “battles” such as answering questions correctly in class, scoring well on graded activities, and participating during class discussions. Odds and Ends

1. All conference times are filled.  Please let me know if you would like to meet and I can set something up for one afternoon after school.
2. I am moving the pizza and movie celebration one more time.  I am moving it to next Mon.  (I have 2 students who will be out of town on Fri. and I want everyone to be able to attend.)
3. Important information about Reading Olympics will be in tomorrow's packet.
4. Looks like we will have a full week this week.  It will be good to get back into our old routine.

Reminders for this week

The SCA has  rescheduled the SCA fundraiser for Haiti. "Hats for Haiti" will now be on this Friday (2/12). Students can donate $1 (or more) to support the event and wear a hat. Students should bring in the money on Friday.

Movie and a pizza has been moved (again) to next Fri.  Students can bring in $2.50 to cover the cost.

Mrs. Petree is collecting items for the Valentine goodie bags until Thur.

Papers in today's packet can be kept this week.  Just sign and returen the envelope.  In the packet today was a sign up sheet for parent teacher conference day.

Race 4 test Fri.

Report cards will go home  Thurs.

Parents, since we are getting a lot of bad weather, please send me a note if anything has changed since you filled out the bad weather early release information last fall.  If I do not hear from you, I will follow the directions on the form if we have an early release.

• What traditions we will see in the opening ceremony?

• make a poster about what you have learned

• what will the metals look like

• what sports will be competing

Hi everybody, hope you are enjoying your snow days.  Thought I would let you know some exciting news.  The eagle has laid the first egg.  It was laid on Jan. 31. and will take 31-35 days to hatch.  Can you fingure out when it will hatch?  Here is the link incase you would like to check in on them.

Hi everybody, hope you are enjoying the snow. Last week my class did very well on their Benchmark tests. To reward them for their hard work, I planned a pizza party for this Friday. Students will bring in $2.50 to cover the cost of the pizza and I will supply the plates, napkins and dessert. They also need to bring in a drink to go along with the pizza. Due to the fact bad weather is heading this way again on Friday, I need to postpone our pizza and a movie until next Friday. I do not want to risk us having an early release due to bad weather right in the middle of our party.  For students who may not want pizza, they may pack a lunch. Be safe in the snow and hope to see everyone soon.

Just a quick note to tell everyone that I am very proud of how my students did on their Benchmark tests! We are now done and I know they each did their very best. I will be going over these scores during our next conference. If you want, feel free to email me and I will send you the scores. As a reward, we will be doing a pizza party next week. Ms. Burnett here! It has been wonderful getting to know the students over the past week. I am very proud to be a part of such a great team! I have had the pleasure of meeting a couple of student’s parents and look forward to meeting more of you during my time here in Mrs. J’s classroom.




In addition to familiarizing myself with the ins and outs of classroom life and getting to know the students, I have been busy planning a unit on fractions that we will begin next week. I look forward to working with the students as we explore fractions through the use of hands-on manipulatives, Promethean Board Activlessons, puzzles, and more!



Next week the students will also be starting an exciting new science unit with Mrs. Adkins! They will explore how plants and animals in an ecosystem interact with one another and the nonliving environment.



My time here is off to a great start and it is truly a pleasure to be part of this amazing team!

Update Jan. 19, 2010

We are very excited to welcome Ms. Jennifer Brunette to our classroom. She will be our student teacher until March 12. Please check your Tuesday packet for a letter from Ms Brunette.



Coming up next week will be our end of nine week Benchmark tests. We will be spending a lot of time this week review for these test.



Students gave their oral book reports today. They were wonderful! A Smilebox will be sent out tomorrow. They really did a great job.

Classroom need:

With all the "Flu bugs" going around, I would like to wipe the student's desk, keyboards, mice, etc. down at least once a day so..... I need desinfectant wipes. Any brand will do. Hopefully these bugs will "get out of town" soon. Thanks so much! Mrs. J

Just a few reminders. Yearbook order forms went home today in the Tues. packet. Please fill out a separate form and check for each yearbook you order. The last day we can accept money at school for books is 1/22/10.

I need your help……..






Dear Parents,



Would you join me in helping our children develop a little more responsibility? Multiple Students have been coming back to the classroom to retrieve homework materials. I am giving students plenty of time at the end of the day to look at their agenda and organize their homework materials. Because our classroom also serves as my office and because as fourth graders we want to increase our student’s level of responsibility, I am asking that you not return to school after 3:00. As always if your child is ill, if you request, I will leave your child’s homework materials in the front office. If you could please remind your child in the morning to use their time wisely and double check their agenda at the end of the day, this would be very helpful.



We have had so many positive experiences as a class this year and I believe this will be another that will help us grow as a team. Thank you so much for your support.
