Exciting project and updates
We are so excited to announce our winter class project. We as a class will be collecting change until Dec. 16 in hopes of raising enough money to donate a flock of ducks to a needy family. We will be doing this through Heifer International. (http://www.heifer.org/homeview?msource=magento) I have explained that this is not a door to door solicitation. Students might want to earn this by doing an extra chore or donating their ice cream money a couple of days. The students are very excited about this and we will keep you posted about our progress.

Pack a lunch on Monday, Oct. 3
I thought we would make Monday a special day. We are on a field trip Mon. morning and are getting back after our normal lunch time. Instead of switching lunch times with another class, I thought it would be fun to eat a bag lunch in the room and finish a movie that we had started last week. So....pack a lunch and a drink on Mon.

It's A School Night
by Ali and Cindy Parente
T'was the night before school started
when all through the town
The parents were cheering
It was a riotous sound
By eight the kids were washed
and tucked into bed
When memories of homework
Filled them with dread
New pencils, new folders,
new notebooks, too
New teachers, new friends ~
their anxiety grew
The parents just giggled when they
learned of this fright
And shouted upstairs ~
GO TO BED--IT'S A SCHOOL NIGHT!

Baby Lee Tree
Lee Tree update
Wanted to let everyone know about the watering schedule for the Lee Tree. I have ordered a 20 gallon bag to put around the tree. It will slowly release water to the tree while at the same time offer a little protection. I should have it in a week or two. In the mean time we need to water it every chance we get. It would be great if everyone could 2 gallons of water on it at least once a week. Once we get the bag on, we will just need to keep it filled. Needless to say, if we get several days of rain, we can hold off on the watering. Thanks for your help with this class project. Check the blog for up dates throughout the summerJ

Just a short note to wrap up a few loose ends. I forgot to announce at the picnic that I will be sending a $25 donation to the Va Wildlife Center from our class. This will go to help the baby eagles. Also wanted to let you know that I will be setting up my classroom Aug. 22. from 9-12. Students are welcome to come and help if they like. I will send more information closer to the time using Teacher Ease. Again, thanks for a great year. Have a wonderful summer...we will be back before we know it!

This Sat. night is the candle light walk at Cold Harbor Battlefield. Tours start at dark but you wll want to get there about 8 p.m. It is free and the whole family will enjoy this event.
Please send back the Yehakin sign up forms. Looks like we will have a good day to build....hot, but no rain:)

Parents, just a few reminders and request, Four things…In Tuesday’s envelope, you will find the items we will need to build the Yehakin. Please check anything that you can help with. Our build date is June 8th starting at 8:30. Another thing we need help with is the class auction which will be the last day of school. These items can be sent in to our classroom starting the last week of school. The Candel Light walk at Cold Harbor is June 4th starting shortly after 8:00. This is a very educational walk through history. Hope to see you there. Finally, please make sure that you have the date and time of our class picnic on your calendar. It will be June 15th at 6 in the school cafeteria. The whole family in invited. A pizza order form will be sent out in a few weeks. Sad news...
Last night I learned of some sad news. The momma eagle that we had been watching on the Eagle Cam was killed yesterday morning. I told the class this morning and we had a good discussion about what was going to happen to the 3 babies. At first it was believed that the father eagle would try to feed the babies for the next month. Later this morning it was decided they would be better off in a wildlife center. At 10 this morning we watched as the 3 babies were removed from the nest to be taken to the wildlife center. You should be very proud of the way the children handled this sad news.

SCA Reps/Alternates passed along the word about Hats On day this Friday, April 1st - We will be collecting money for the Relief Fund for Japan through Save the Children. It will be a Foolish Hat day to celebrate April Fools' Day.
WOW! We filled up the bucket for the first time last week, and have at least 1/3 of the bucket filled again. GREAT JOB! The more times we fill the bucket, the better the chances that we could win a trophy for the school and a gift card for the school. SO KEEP THOSE BOTTLE CAPS COMING!

Eagle Cam
Today in class we checked on the pair of eagles that are laying eggs in a nest in Norfolk. What I did not realize is that 1 egg was laid on Thur. and that they expect another to be laid this weekend. Here is the address. This is a great family project. Last year she laid 3 eggs!

contest
Here is a contest that I thought you all might want to enter. Please follow the guidlelines. Entries are due to me Mar. 1st. I will scan them and enter them in the contest. Students who enter will receive a coupon. This is a statewide contest, so please take your time and do your best. Good Luck Mrs J
We would like to invite your fourth graders to participate in our 18th annual poster contest – “Use a Helmet, Prevent Epilepsy.” The purpose of the contest is to raise awareness about epilepsy, how it impacts children and to dispel many of the myths surrounding this common condition. This is a fun and educational activity, and we hope you will encourage your fourth grade art classes to participate. This packet contains everything you will need.
Winners of the contest will be invited to spend a day in Richmond. Events will include a breakfast honoring the winners, a special reception with Senators and members of the House of Delegates, and a tour of the State Capitol building. The chosen artwork will become EFVA’s calendar for 2011-2012, and copies will be sent to the teachers and winning children.
Here are some important facts about epilepsy to share with your students and teachers:
Head injury is the largest known cause of epilepsy, especially among young adults.
Approximately one child in every hundred has epilepsy
Although epilepsy can begin at any age, 75% of all seizures begin before age 21.
Medical research shows that helmets can prevent 85% of head injuries to bicyclists.
Each year in the United States about 150 children are killed in bicycle accidents, and about 40,000 children between the ages of 5 and 14 sustain head, face and scalp injuries.
In 1998 there were more than 16,000 head injuries associated with skiing and skateboarding. We estimate more than 7,000 could have been prevented by helmet use.
A growing interest in extreme sports has resulted in significantly more injuries in the last five years.
Our hope is that this poster contest will create a greater awareness of the importance of wearing a helmet during recreational activities. Together we can educate children and teachers about the importance of wearing helmets
