Update for March 23, 2010




Happy Spring everybody. Hope all is enjoying the warm weather! I have a few reminders for this week…

 Reading Olympic completion is Friday. Students not in Ro will be having a pizza party. They will need to bring in $2 to cover the cost. They may give this to me anytime.

 Students in RO got a schedule today. Parents will need to save this and bring it with them on Friday.

 Students received information on the spring party today. Each child will need to bring in a clean ½ gallon milk/juice cardboard carton with their name on the bottom. It will be used in a craft.

 Please call Mrs. Kemp 928-6500 if you could provide a snack or goodie for the goodie bag for the party

 Fieldtrip to the battlefields tomorrow! It looks like we will have great weather! Students need to bring a bag lunch, drink, beach towel and trash bag (the ground will be damp, so we will put the trash bag under the towel)

 Spring pictures will be March 30

 Race 7 test will be March 31

 End of 3rd nine weeks will be April 2. That is a whole day.

 Spring party will be April 2 starting at 1:00

Ask your child about the special visitor that came to class today – Mr. Johnny Clem! Mr. Clem was a nine-year-old drummer boy for the Union during the Civil War. The students were able to ask him a series of questions about his life during the Civil War and he even brought two special treats to share with the class! The first “treat” he brought was hardtack, a hard, flat, cracker/biscuit that soldiers ate during the Civil War. The other treat was apple cake, a special treat that the young soldier’s mother would make for him. Here are the recipes for these two treats so you can try them at home!
Hardtack:
4 cups flour
4 teaspoons salt
2 cups water

Mix the flour and salt together. Add enough water to wet the mixture (may not need all 2 cups). Roll out the mixture on a pan and bake at 300 degrees until hardened.
Apple Cake:
1 cup brown sugar            1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup white sugar              1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs                               1 cup milk
2 ½ cups flour                   2 cups apples, chopped to small pieces
½ cup butter/margarine      1 teaspoon vanilla
Grease and flour a 13”x9” pan (or cupcake pans). Cream the sugars and butter. Add eggs. Mix dry ingredients and add with milk. Add apples and vanilla. Pour in pan and sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon (chopped walnuts are optional). Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Greetings All!
Since we are nearing the end of our literature circles I would like to take the opportunity to get everyone up to speed with where we are right now and where we are going in the near future.

Students are reading each assigned section of their chosen book and completing their assigned literature circle role for that section. They are then meeting for a book talk with their group where students share and respond to each other’s contributions. I am very proud of the effort students are putting into each of their roles so far and I am looking forward to exploring their Literature Circle Response Journals when they turn them in to be graded. It is always interesting to see what each student has gotten out of the different parts of the book they chose to read.

As we are finishing up our books, I do want to remind you all of our Book Celebration Day that is quickly approaching us on March 12, 2010. I will be bringing in a special treat that relates to each of the books and each student’s Book Response Project will be due on that day as well. Each student will share his or her book response at the celebration. I would also like to extend an invitation to any parents, grandparents, or other family that would like to join us to please feel free to do so. The Book Celebration Day promises to be a fun (and tasty) way to conclude our literature circles and we would love to have you there to share in the excitement! I will provide more details on the times and schedule of events later.

Just a few odds and ins...thanks to Mrs. Petree for the great cupcakes.  We had our pizza and watched "Cars".  Reading Olympic practice is Thur.  after school.  Don't forget to print off your reading record by lunch time on Thur.  We should be done with the book "Clemintine" so you can take the test by Thur.  Don't forget the next Race test is Wed.  We will also be having SODA on Wed.  That's it for now.  Remember to check back often
