Feb. 22
Just a few odds and ins...thanks to Mrs. Petree for the great cupcakes. We had our pizza and watched "Cars". Reading Olympic practice is Thur. after school. Don't forget to print off your reading record by lunch time on Thur. We should be done with the book "Clemintine" so you can take the test by Thur. Don't forget the next Race test is Wed. We will also be having SODA on Wed. That's it for now. Remember to check back often

Classroom Update!
We have been very busy lately catching up from all of our snow days. The students have been working really hard and their effort certainly shows!
In reading we have formed “Literature Circles” based on the students’ first, second, and third choice book out of four options. All of the students were pleased to see that they were placed in a group of either their first or second choice. This week they have read the first assigned section of their book and completed their first literature circle role. I am very proud of their hard work so far and am excited to hear them share their jobs in our first book talk tomorrow (Friday)!
In math the students have mastered adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators and we are moving on into adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. This could prove to be a challenging task for students, but I know they can do it!
In social studies we have marched into studying the Civil War. We have watched a video and covered chapter 10, lesson 1 in our social studies textbook. There will be a quiz on this section on Tuesday, February 23, 2010.
In response to our studies of the Civil War, Mrs. Jones’ 4th graders have also been divided, much like the states of our early nation. Two-thirds of the class now represents the Union and one-third of the class represents those who have “seceded” to form the Confederate States of America. Students will gain points for their side through academic “battles” such as answering questions correctly in class, scoring well on graded activities, and participating during class discussions. Ask your son or daughter which side they are a member of!
It was very nice to see many of you at the Parent-Teacher Conferences held this evening!

Feb 15
Odds and Ends
- All conference times are filled. Please let me know if you would like to meet and I can set something up for one afternoon after school.
- I am moving the pizza and movie celebration one more time. I am moving it to next Mon. (I have 2 students who will be out of town on Fri. and I want everyone to be able to attend.)
- Important information about Reading Olympics will be in tomorrow's packet.
- Looks like we will have a full week this week. It will be good to get back into our old routine.

Reminders for this week
The SCA has rescheduled the SCA fundraiser for Haiti. "Hats for Haiti" will now be on this Friday (2/12). Students can donate $1 (or more) to support the event and wear a hat. Students should bring in the money on Friday.
Movie and a pizza has been moved (again) to next Fri. Students can bring in $2.50 to cover the cost.
Mrs. Petree is collecting items for the Valentine goodie bags until Thur.
Papers in today's packet can be kept this week. Just sign and returen the envelope. In the packet today was a sign up sheet for parent teacher conference day.
Race 4 test Fri.
Report cards will go home Thurs.

Happy Snow day #4!
Wow, I think our classroom snowflakes brought us lots of snow this winter! When you get tired of playing in the snow, head over to

• choose one sport to learn more about
• learn about the Olympic mascots
• research the country where they will be held
• research and follow the Olympic flame as it makes it/s way across Canada
• research and follow your favorite Olympian
• research the first Olympics
• What traditions we will see in the opening ceremony?
• make a poster about what you have learned
• what will the metals look like
• what sports will be competing
Next week you can share what you learned:)
Do not forget to read on your AR book. You need to take the computer test by Feb. 15. You will then read another by the end of the month and I will take the higher of the 2 grades. Check our blog later this weekend for more intersting web sites to visit! Mrs. J
